A local community group in Rossnowlagh has taken aim at a recent littering spree that has been spoiling the area’s picturesque beauty – and causing issues for residents who have to clean it up each weekend.
The Friends of Rossnowlagh group are appealling to all visitors to the beloved beach to be resposnible and take care of their rubbish – and to call out those who aren’t.
It’s after a recent spate of what the group describes as intentional vandalism of the beach, listing a series of recent incidents, including:
- Broken glass scattered across the public car park
- Bottles smashed into the rock armour on the beach
- A life ring being removed from the beach and abandoned in the car park
- Bins thrown out of the toilet facilities
- Glass smashed in the community notice board
- One of the beach signs being removed and discarded
“This is more than littering – it is dangerous, damaging, and deeply disrespectful,” the group said in a statement condemning the behaviour.
“Rossnowlagh is our shared home – loved by families, walkers, surfers, swimmers, and visitors. Protecting it is everyone’s responsibility.”
They are also reminding the public of the impact that such acts of vandalism could have.
“Broken glass can cause serious injuries to people and pets. Damaged safety equipment (like life rings) could cost lives. Broken bins and toilets make the beach less welcoming for everyone.Damaged notice boards and signs mean lost information and lost community spirit.”
“If you witness serious vandalism or anti-social behaviour, please report it immediately to the Gardaí at Ballyshannon – 071 985 8530.”
“Rossnowlagh belongs to all of us. Together, we can keep it safe, beautiful, and a place we’re proud to share with future generations.”
