Planning permission is being sought to add a fresh fish shop and cafe to the hugely popular Killybegs Seafood Shack enterprise.
The fish and chip van was forced to move from its pierside location last summer as Killybegs regeneration works got underway.
To save the business, owners Mairead and Gary Anderson moved the shack to the courtyard of a premises they had bought on Killybegs Main Street. With just weeks to prepare, they reopened at their new location in May 2024.
Now, the Andersons are pursuing plans to establish permanent dining options at the site.
A new application to Donegal County Council seeks retention permission for the ‘Seafood Shack’ food truck on site. The application details plans to transform a former storage building into a cafe, commercial kitchen, and fresh fish shop, complete with a first-floor seating area accessible by a new two-story stairway, and the inclusion of toilets on both the ground and upper levels.
The Seafood Shack, hailed as one of Ireland’s best fish and chip hotspots, opened in 2017 and surged in popularity during the pandemic when outdoor dining was permitted. It has fed many famous faces such as Chef Neven Maguire and TikTok foodie Matthew Davies-Binge from the Food Review Club.
