There has been a 44% jump in cancelled hospital appointments at Letterkenny University Hospital in the past year.
The number of appointments cut has risen from 4,311 in 2023 to 6,216 in 2024.
The situation continues in 2025, as the hospital cancelled more elective surgeries this week due to overcrowding.
The busy Easter period saw 173 people attending the LUH Emergency Department in one day on Tuesday. The hospital also experienced a Norovirus outbreak in one ward this week.
There were also 880 cancellations at LUH in the first month of 2025 alone.
Elective surgeries become affected when there is overcrowding as a result of emergency waiting times and Covid/outbreak issues. Urgent, time sensitive cases are always prioritised at the hospital when there is pressure on bed availability.
