The man charged with assault causing serious harm in relation to the death of Eddie Friel in Killybegs has been refused bail.
James Spendley, 57, of St Cummin’s Hill, Killybegs appeared before Judge Sandra Murphy at Sligo District Court on Thursday morning, April 24.
He has been in custody since being arrested by Detective Garda Niall Brady in the early hours of Monday, April 14.
An application for bail was made on his behalf by solicitor Gerry McGovern. Members of Mr Friel’s family were present in court for the bail hearing.
Detective Garda Brady outlined his objection to bail. This included the seriousness of the offence with which Spendley has been charged to date, the evidence garnered during the course of the ongoing investigation, and the proximity of Spendley’s address to that of the crime scene and to the residences of members of Mr Friel’s family.
Judge Sandra Murphy said: “I am satisfied that it is a serious offence. I am taking into account that there is a likelihood of danger to people in the community if Mr Spendley is released on bail.
“It is necessary for me to refuse bail.”
Spendley was remanded in custody to Castlerea Prison to appear again before Sligo District Court on Thursday, May 1.
The court heard that further charges are expected to be brought against the defendant, and that Spendley is undergoing psychiatric consultation in prison.
