Tidy Towns committees in Donegal will benefit from a new nationwide insurance agreement agreed to by Government and local authorities.
Over 1,000 Tidy Towns committees will benefit from the new insurance premium, which is being provided by the Irish Public Bodies (IPB) Insurance and local authorities.
Instead of individual insurance premiums that often scale between €1,500 and €7,000 for Tidy Towns groups depending on the size of town, now all Tidy Towns groups are eligible to be pooled together under one master policy, undertaken by their local authority – including Donegal County Council.
“I am delighted to see this initiative by government come through which has seen almost 700 groups to date avail of the scheme,” Sligo, Leitrim and South Donegal TD Frank Feighan said in a statement.
“If the Northwest is to continue to attract visitors to their region we must ensure out local towns and villages look their very best and I am convinced without the input of volunteers in the tidy towns groups it would be a challenge to present our towns in the way they should be.”
“Tidy Towns groups organise clean up days, flower baskets, watering, weeding, new planting, town entrance enhancement to name but a few, it requires work and commitment and I am pleased to see local authorities provide materials grants and now insurance which I hope will ease the financial burden on local committees and encourage more people to volunteer and get involved with their tidy towns group,” concluded Deputy Feighan.
