A total of sixteen drivers were caught driving under the influence of drink or drugs across the Easter Bank Holiday weekend in Donegal.
Of those, six were caught drink driving, while ten drivers were found to be driving while under the influence of drugs.
Garda Niall Maguire has appealed to the public to take road safety messages seriously, with a wide range of other driving offences detected during the Bank Holiday roads operation, which took place from Thursday until Monday.
Donegal Gardaí issued fines and other penalties for drivers that were caught speeding, driving without tax, insurance or a driving licence, driving with bald tyres, dangerous driving and driving while disqualified.
Garda Maguire says that while there were no fatal road traffic collisions in Donegal this weekend, more needs to be done to keep others on the road safe after the sheer number of detections made by Gardaí.
“Thankfully we did not have any fatal road traffic collisions in the Donegal Division over the course of the Easter Bank Holiday Weekend but given the amount of detections in relation to a range of road traffic offences it is obvious that the road safety message is just not hitting home with some people,” Garda Maguire said.
“Sixteen arrests for driving under the influence of alcohol/drugs is a worrying figure. Even one arrest for driving while under the influence is one too high.”
“We continue to appeal to all drivers to slow down, to drive with care and never to drive while under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs.”
