A serving priest in the Derry Diocese has been arrested on suspicion of attempted sexual communication with a child.
It is understood the priest is a 58-year-old practising cleric who has served both in Donegal and Derry.
A PSNI spokesperson said: “A man was arrested on Thursday, 17th April, on suspicion of attempted sexual communication with a child.
“He remains in police custody at his time. There are no further details.”
The arrest follows an incident involving ‘paedophile hunters’ outside a Derry hotel earlier this afternoon.
A video of the incident has been circulating widely on social media on which various allegations are put to the priest about his alleged sexual activity with treatment.
At one stage the priest staggers back against a wall and asks those putting the allegations to him to stop.
A spokesperson for the Derry Diocese said they are aware of the incident involving a priest from the Derry Diocese.
