A man charged in relation to the death of Eddie Friel in Killybegs at the weekend has appeared in court again today.

James Spendley (57), of St Cummins Hill, Killybegs, appeared before Judge Sandra Murphy via videolink at Sligo District Court this morning.

He had previously appeared yesterday, in person, at Carrick-on-Shannon District Court, where he was formally charged with assault causing serious harm to Mr Friel.

Legal aid was granted to solicitor Gerry McGovern.

At this morning’s sitting, Mr McGovern applied for the matter to be adjourned to the same court on Thursday, April 24.

He indicated that there would be an application for bail on that date.

Inspector Frank Egan said: “It is the state’s application to continue remand in custody to Sligo District Court. We have noted that there will be a bail application.”

Judge Murphy remanded the defendant in custody to appear in person before Sligo District Court next Thursday.

An investigation was launched after the discovery of the body of Mr Friel in the town on Sunday.

Mr Friel, who was in his 60s, lived alone in a bungalow on the Harbour View Drive estate in the fishing town.

It is understood he may have died a violent death.
