A stern road safety reminder has been issued, ahead of the upcoming Easter Bank Holiday weekend.
Donegal Gardaí will enact a policing plan this weekend to protect people, their property and to ensure safety on the county’s roads.
Six people have died already so far in the first four months of this year on the county’s roads.
In 2024, a total of 17 people were killed in road traffic collisions in County Donegal also.
Garda Grainne Doherty has appealed to road users to slow down, and says that Gardaí will also be focused on “key lifesaver offences” such as speeding.
“Firstly, we make the usual appeal ahead of the Bank Holiday weekend in relation to road safety. We urge drivers to slow down, to look out for vulnerable road users and to take regular breaks while on long journeys to avoid driver fatigue.”
“Do not drive while under the influence of alcohol or drugs, wear a seatbelt and do not use/hold a mobile phone while driving. Pedestrians should ensure that they can be seen clearly by drivers.”
She is also reminding drivers that many families will be out on the roads this weekend, and for road users to prioritise their safety and the safety of others above all else.
“This Easter Bank Holiday weekend, members of An Garda Síochána will focus on the detection of key lifesaver offences which include speeding, drink/drug driving, non-wearing of seat-belts and using a mobile phone while driving.”
“Many families will be out on the roads enjoying their Easter break this weekend and so we urge all drivers to be mindful of their own safety and the safety of others. We can all play a part in preventing tragedies on our roads and we urge all road users to do their bit by making responsible decisions.”
Members of the public are also being urged to get in touch with their local Garda station if they witness instances of dangerous driving on the roads this weekend.
