Biddy’s O’Barnes, a beloved Donegal institution for over 150 years, has entered an exciting new chapter
with the launch of The Byre at Biddy’s in June 2024.
This intimate coffee spot, nestled beside the iconic pub, brings a fresh take on local hospitality while staying true to the rich traditions that have made Biddy’s a favourite among locals and visitors alike.
Megan Wilkes, owner of Biddy’s O’Barnes describes the core values of the establishment as an authentic
experience that stands the test of time “Biddy’s has a soul of its own, a place that carries stories and
traditions that go back generations. Our role has always been about honouring that history while
evolving with the times”.
The inspiration behind The Byre at Biddy’s stems from Megan’s creative entrepreneurial vision, who saw
huge potential in a once-derelict cowshed beside the pub.
“Every day, I passed by that little building and imagined something more—an inviting space where people could enjoy a great cup of coffee while soaking in the stunning views of Barnesmore Gap,” Megan shared.
After years of careful planning and overcoming challenges—including a global pandemic—the transformation was finally completed and Megan’s dream became reality, resulting in a space that perfectly complements the welcoming
atmosphere of Biddy’s.
With just three stools inside, The Byre is small in size but big in character. On a sunny day, the entire
landscape becomes an extension of the café, with visitors taking their coffee to stone benches, down to
the Lowermore River, or along the road for their next Donegal adventure.

The Byre and Biddy’s O’Barnes are both built on a foundation of supporting local producers and
communities.
Over 85% of The Byre’s retail products are sourced from Donegal businesses, from New
Kids Coffee to McLoone’s honey.
“Donegal is full of incredible food and drink producers, and we want to showcase them in every way possible”.
That core value is at the heart of everything they do at Biddy’s and The Byre and has been central to their own growth and development over the many years.
Megan’s own journey to Donegal was anything but conventional. Born in Texas, she moved frequently
throughout her childhood, living in Utah and St. Louis before embarking on a career that spanned
gastropubs, diners, event marketing, and even a haunted house.
Her path eventually led her to Australia, where she worked in hospitality and marketing—until fate introduced her to her husband Aaron, a Donegal native with a “small pub” back home.
What started as an adventure soon became life- changing!
“Moving to Ireland wasn’t just about taking on a new business-it was about stepping into a
piece of history. Over the years, Donegal has become home in every way, and I wouldn’t want to be
anywhere else”.
Adjusting to life in Donegal came with a unique set of challenges—from deciphering accents to
embracing the relaxed approach to timekeeping—but Megan quickly grew to love the deep sense of
community and tradition.
“There’s a different rhythm to life here- one where everyone knows everyone (or is related!) and plans here tend to be more of a suggestion than a firm schedule. But I learned to appreciate the way people take time for each other, how conversations aren’t rushed and how there’s always a story to be told”.
Building trust within the Biddy’s O’Barnes legacy was a gradual process, but through thoughtful,
respectful changes, she and Aaron proved their dedication to preserving its heritage.
Now, Donegal isn’t just where she lives; it’s where she’s built a home, a business, and a community that feels like family.
“Even though my family is back in the U.S, we have a support system here that feels like family. Donegal
has a warmth that’s hard to describe, and while I wasn’t born here, it truly feels like home”.
Beyond great coffee and homemade treats, The Byre has become a platform for collaboration, working
closely with Food Coast Donegal to help small food businesses break into the market. The ethos of ‘With
Love from Donegal’ is at the heart of every decision made”.
The Byre and Biddy’s future is rooted in thoughtful, sustainable growth.
“Every development we’ve done has been about enhancing what’s already here while preserving the history and character that makes this place so special. That will always be the heart of what we do”.
Plans are underway to expand The Byre Pantry with even more Donegal-made jams, sauces, and specialty items, alongside continuing the popular Chef’s Table dining experiences led by acclaimed chefs Chris McMenamin and Colin McKee.
The team is also passionate about investing in the future of Donegal’s food scene.
“We want to nurture the next generation of chefs and hospitality professionals, ensuring that talent and opportunities stay within the county,” Megan added.
Through training initiatives with Donegal ETB, mentorship programs, and new collaborations aimed at promoting Donegal’s food scene on a bigger stage, The Byre and Biddy’s are not just growing their own business—they’re shaping the future of Donegal’s hospitality industry.
