Donegal’s hurlers were defeated in their opening fixture of the Christy Ring Cup this afternoon despite a battling performance.
Donegal were thumped thoroughly by Derry in their final Division 2 League fixture which confirmed relegation for Mickey McCann’s men – but they were determined to make amends at Celtic Park.
They led at the half-time interval, both sides striking the back of the net in a feisty first half – the one point advantage for Donegal, 1-09 to 1-08.
Derry would push on after the break, but Donegal found ways to keep pressure on the Oak Leaf men and stay in touching distance.
However it wasn’t to be, a supreme 1-09 scoring performance from Derry’s Christy McNaughton enough to carry his side to a close 1-21 to 1-17 final score.
