Donegal County Council is considering installing steel ramps in Letterkenny town to improve wheelchair accessibility.
Councillor Jimmy Kavanagh suggested the ramps as a more affordable and straightforward alternative to dropped kerbs.
Cllr Kavanagh has previously highlighted the lack of dropped kerbs in Letterkenny, which render some disabled parking spaces unusable for wheelchair users.
He said that the installation of metal ramps “looks to me to be a simple solution that can be applied quickly.”
Cllr Kavanagh told Tuesday’s meeting of the Letterkenny-Milford MD: “I’ve seen these (steel ramps) in use in several towns in Ireland and further afield and I ask the council to give consideration to this as a much simpler way than a drop kerb.”
Mr David McElwaine, Senior Executive Engineer of the roads section, said the council may do a trial with a metal ramp at an agreed location.
Councillors were also told that proposed regeneration schemes in Letterkenny, such as the TII and NTA Active schemes, will improve accessibility on footpaths that are included in their programmes of works.
