A Donegal County Councillor has expressed disappointment that a search for a home ground for the Letterkenny Cricket Club hasn’t progressed in a year.
Councillor Michael McBride has been campaigning for council lands on the plains of the Swilly to be turned into a sports ground.
Members of Letterkenny Cricket Club, despite their successes, have to make a 2.5hour round trip to Drummond cricket ground near Limavady to practice.
In July 2024, Cllr McBride asked for a master plan for Donegal County Council owned lands adjacent to the river Swilly and the Neil T Blaney road, with a view to finding a suitable site for the club.
However, this week, it has emerged that there are not enough resources to dedicate to the preparation of the plan.
Cllr McBride was told that the Council are exploring the “best mechanism” to deliver on the request for a masterplan on the lands at Neil T. Blaney Road.
“I know that the club will be disappointed with the answer today,” Cllr McBride told Tuesday’s meeting of the Letterkenny-Milford Municipal District. “We have to move forward with a guarantee this is going to be dealt with in the short term.
“We need to be upfront on whether we can or can’t help them out with their quest for a home for their cricket field.”
