Donegal County Council has been urged to identify the owners of derelict properties in Meadowbank estate in a bid to stamp out anti-social behaviour.
Two vacant homes at number 99 and 100 in the Glencar estate have become a gathering spot for teens, Councillor Jimmy Kavanagh said.
Cllr Kavanagh told the Letterkenny-Milford MD meeting that fire services had to be called to a recent fire at the properties.
“They are a magnet for antisocial behaviour and are bringing down the value of everything around them and the quality of life of those in the estate,” Cllr Kavanagh said.
He urged the local authority to contact the homeowners with a view of getting them back into use or placed on the derelict buildings register.
“If not, I ask that we secure a CPO (compulsory purchase order) on them,” Cllr Kavanagh said.
The executive agreed to look into bringing the properties back into use.
In 2019 Donegal County Council identified and engaged with the owners of a number of vacant properties in the Meadowbank Estate in Letterkenny.
This initiative did lead to several of the properties coming back into use and being refurbished.
Following Cllr Kavanagh’s motion, the Council will now follow up further with the owners of the remaining vacant properties in the Meadowbank Estate with a view, in the first instance, to make them aware of the significant financial supports available through the Vacant Property Refurbishment Grant Scheme.
