Jack Larry may not have reached the Grand Final on Glór Tíre, but he can look back on his time on the long-running TG4 show with considerable pride.
The 23-year-old Buncrana veterinary nurse, farmer, and country musician was one of five semi-finalists on last night’s Glór Tíre. The most prestigious country music programme on Irish television was broadcast live on Irish language station, TG4.
Jack enjoyed a strong run on the competition, and delivered some great performances, such as his recent single, ‘I’ll Settle For Old Ireland’, ‘The Rose of Castlerea’, a personal favourite of both Jack and his family, and perhaps most surprisingly, his lively take on Status Quo’s ‘Burning Bridges’.
“I wanted to do something a bit different from what I’ve done every other week,” says Jack. “‘Burning Bridges’ is one to do a line dance to, rather than say your usual jives or quick steps.”
While Jack’s time on the programme is over, he can look back fondly on his Glór Tíre run, knowing he has won many new fans along the way.
“Throughout Glór Tíre I was getting great support in Donegal and I was down at the jiving championships in Ballinasloe at the weekend. I got to do a few songs with Mike Denver on the Sunday, and there’s no better place down there. Half the country was down for the jiving and I got a great reaction from
everyone.”
As both a singer and performer, Jack feels he has gained much from being on Glór Tíre.
“You learn a lot about how to engage with the public, social media, and doing interviews. I would always have been a bit
camera shy, so this has all been a great stepping stone and a good experience.”
After Glór Tíre, Jack will be taking the next steps in his musical career with a new confidence and determination, while still attending to his farming duties.
“It’s a busy time of year. We would be just right in the middle of the lambing season,” he says. “The sheep are lambing back at home and they still have to be looked after, but yeah, my father has been running about trying to get things sorted for that while I’ve been on the show.”
