The first Corncrake of the year has been spotted in Donegal.
The news was broken by the Corncrake LIFE Project.
The group did not disclose the exact location of the bird.
A spokesperson said “Absolutely thrilled to announce the first Corncrake of the year. Reported this morning by our team in Donegal.”
Corncrakes are summer visitors to Ireland and breed from mid May to early August.
They winter in south east Africa before making the huge journey here in Spring.
The birds nest on the ground in tall vegetation and there has been extensive conservation projects in an effort to protect and increase their dwindling numbers.
