April 2, 2025

A man found in possession of €1,700 worth of cannabis when searched at Letterkenny Garda Station has been given a chance to avoid prison.

Shane Luiz has been ordered to do 100 hours of community service.

At Letterkenny District Court, Luiz, aged 25 and of Cruise Park Drive, Tyrrelstown, Mulhuddart, Dublin 15, was given the community service order in lieu of six months in prison.

He was charged that he was unlawfully in possession of a controlled drug, namely cannabis, for the purpose of selling or otherwise supplying it to another. The charge is contrary to section 15 of the Misuse of Drugs Act, 1977.

The drugs were located when Luiz was searched at Letterkenny Garda Station on February 25, 2021.

Luiz was not present in court when the matter was heard before Judge Ciaran Liddy.

A probation report outlined that Luiz was suitable for community service and Inspector Seamus McGonigle confirmed that Luiz had no previous convictions.

Judge Liddy ordered the accused to complete 100 hours of community service in lieu of a six-month prison sentence.
