British actress Erin Doherty is said to be planning a trip to her grandfather’s home country in Carndonagh.
Doherty, who stars in the hard-hitting Netflix drama Adolescence, is fiercely proud of her Irish heritage.
“My dad’s dad, my granddad, was from Carndonagh in Donegal. That’s where we’re from, and I’ve always been so proud to have that heritage,” Doherty told the Irish Examiner.
Doherty also said she is planning a trip to Inishowen with her dad and sister soon.
She fondly remembers her grandfather as “the kindest, warmest man.”
Doherty, who also acted in The Crown as Princess Anne, is from Crawley in West Sussex and now resides in North London.
Previously, Doherty said that her grandfather’s thick Carndonagh accent ignited her curiosity in people and their speech and mannerisms.
“I remember being so scared of him because his voice was so booming and his accent was so thick, he sort of became this fantastical figure I could barely understand but knew I didn’t want to get on the wrong side of,” she told Irish Tatler in 2020.
“He’s probably where my fascination with speech comes from and how our voices can have a huge impact on our relationships and how people see us.”
Doherty’s episode of Adolescence was one of the most tense of the series. In episode three, she plays a clinical psychologist who is tasked with making an assessment of a teenage boy charged with murder.
