‘Suspicious’ drug-driver handed one year ban

A Milford man was caught drug-driving after his suspicious activity drew the attention of gardai.

Adam McElwaine was handed a driving ban at Letterkenny District Court.

The 25-year-old, of Gortmacall Milford tendered a guilty plea to a charge of drug-driving.

Inspector Seamus McGonigle told the court that at 11.10pm on November 23, 2020, Gardai observed a blue Skoda Superb acting suspiciously.

The vehicle was stopped and Gardai spoke to the driver, McElwaine. He was arrested and taken to Milford Garda Station where a sample of his blood tested positive for cannabis.

The court heard that McElwaine has 14 previous convictions.

Solicitor Mr Rory O’Brien said his client has “very much changed his life around” and is now “a hard-working family man”.

Judge Ciaran Liddy imposed a one-year disqualification on McElwaine with the commencement of the ban deferred until the end of May.

McElwaine was also fined €100.
