A vandal who destroyed a number of young saplings along Newtowncunningham’s Main Street has now come forward and offered to pay any repairs necessary after a public outcry.
Residents were shocked over the weekend to see the recently-planted young trees severely damaged.
Members of the Newtowncunningham Tidy Towns committee and local Councillor Paul Canning made public appeals for the culprit to come forward – with Cllr Canning even offering a cash reward for anyone that came forward with information that would lead to the conviction of the culprit.
However, now the culprit has come forward and offered to pay all of the repair costs to have replacement trees planted along the Main Street.
“Contact has been made and the person responsible wants to pay for the damage done to the trees,” Cllr Canning posted via social media.
“I am of the opinion that we fix the trees and move on. Nothing to be gained by taking it any further.”
“The person responsible regrets the incident and wishes it never happened.”
