A councillor has claimed a busy bridge used by motorists to dodge the Twin Towns traffic could be ‘closed altogether’ over safety concerns.
Cllr Patrick McGowan raised the issue of the future of Logue’s Bridge at yesterday’s meeting of Donegal County Council.
The narrow 114 year-old structure spans the River Finn between Drumboe and the Glenfin Road.
“We were told no to push plans for a new bridge as the one of the bypass route options would be on the west side of the Twin Towns, near the present Logue’s Bridge,” Cllr McGowan told the meeting.
“Logue’s Bridge is in a poor condition and is used as a shortcut around the towns. But, now there is a big possibility it could be closed altogether due to health and safety issues.
Height and weight restrictions have been imposed on the structure in recent years.
“Talk about traffic jams, everyone will be stuck at McClay’s Corner (Stranorlar). They will also be queueing half way out the (Barnesmore) Gap on the other side. We would need two or three million euro for a new bridge. But we need a temporary solution, fast.”
