A man charged with driving without insurance has been told that he is “skating on very thin ice”.
Nasser Sherzad appeared before Letterkenny District Court in relation to the offence.
A 25-year-old with an address at Glendale Manor, Sherzad was in court having been charged with having no insurance and failing to produce insurance on May 6, 2023 at Oatfield Roundabout, Letterkenny.
Inspector Seamus McGonigle told the court that gardai attended a two-vehicle road traffic collision at around 5.30pm. Gardai spoke with the drivers and made a lawful demand to produce insurance.
Sherzad did not produce insurance.
The court heard that Sherzad was convicted of driving without insurance on May 15, 2023 – a week subsequent to this offence. Judge Ciaran Liddy said he did not interpret this as a previous conviction.
“He is skating on very thin ice,” Sherzad’s solicitor, Mr Frank Dorrian, said.
“He is a man originally from Afghanistan. He is acutely aware that there is no third option here. He only acquired the vehicle within that time frame.”
Judge Liddy fined Sherzad €150 for driving without insurance. A charge of failing to produce insurance was marked as taken into consideration.
