Donegal County Council has put a further €2 million aside to assist first time buyers.
The Local Authority Home Loan (LAHL) is available for people who are unable to obtain sufficient funding from commercial banks to purchase or build a home.
The additional funds were approved at this morning’s meeting of the council.
Proposing the move, Cllr Ciaran Brogan said it was a very good initiative and that the local authority doing its best to help families.
Cllr McClafferty welcomed the allocation, but said it was no good to people living along the N56 who are unable to build new homes due to planning restrictions.
Cllr Martin Harley said the government should be matching the council’s allocation.
“There are around 8,000 derelict and vacant properties in Donegal and the government needs to step up to the plate, too, and put in another €2 million,” Cllr Harley said.
That (council) allocation might only help people build or buy 20 houses.”
