Man caught speeding at 170kph keeps licence after being fined

March 30, 2025

A man caught driving at 170km/h in Donegal has been allowed to keep his licence.

Peter Kilgore was spared a driving ban at Letterkenny District Court.

Kilgore was charged in relation to a speeding offence from June 30, 2024. Inspector Seamus McGonigle told the court that Kilgore was charged with dangerous driving after being clocked at 170km/h on a national primary road governed by a 100km/h speed limit.

Kilgore, a 35-year-old of Coney Road, Derry, was apprehended by gardai, who showed him the speed gun before arresting and charging him.

Solicitor Mr Patsy Gallagher told the court that this was his client’s first time before the court.

“He is a working man and a family man,” Mr Gallagher said, noting that Kilgore fully cooperated and was “deeply apologetic”.

Judge Ciaran Liddy asked if there was a suitable place for Kilgore to make a donation and Mr Gallagher suggested the Carndonagh Scouts.

“It’s an area of the county where education over motor vehicles would be of great benefit,” Mr Gallagher said.

Judge Liddy agreed to accept a plea to a reduced charge of careless driving and said he would not disqualify him on this occasion.

Kilgore was fined €150 and given three months to pay. Judge Liddy ordered Kilgore to pay €500 to the Carndonagh Scouts within one month.

The default order laid down is that if the monetary penalties are not met, Kilgore will have to face a dangerous driving charge.
