Anna Gallagher has been elected as the new Honourary Mayor of Donegal Town.
She will take over from outgoing Mayor Pauric Kennedy, who has held the role since 2017.
There was a large turnout for the elections, with over 1,700 Donegal Town locals casting their ballots at the St John Bosco Centre.
Gallagher won in a tight race against second-placed candidate Gabriel O’Donnell, and third-placed Ciara Martin.
Anna will now take on the voluntary role for the next two years.
Special tribute was also paid to her by An Garda Siochana Donegal after the news of her victory.
Anna’s late husband, Charlie Gallagher, was a well-liked and respected member of the Gardaí in Donegal, who sadly passed away in 2022.
Garda Sgt Oliver Devaney was on hand to issue his congratulations shortly after her win.
“Anna Gallagher has been selected as Honorary Mayor of Donegal Town this evening. Sgt Oliver Devaney was delighted to have his picture taken with Anna after the result of the election was announced,” Donegal Gardaí posted.
“We have no doubt that Anna’s late husband, Garda Charlie Gallagher would have been so proud.”
“Congratulations Anna!”
