Former Donegal star Marty Carlin has decided to call it a day after 40 years on the road as sales rep for Tennent’s Lager.
Most recently employed by C&C Bulmers, he has been traversing the highways and byways of the county promoting the famous Scottish tipple since 1985.
The affable ex Red Hughs and Donegal midfielder was always a welcome face at the many hostelries he visited during that time.
Today, however, Marty handed in his car keys for the final time and will no doubt be missed by his colleagues and customers.
“So, after 40 wonderful years selling Tennents lager – today is my last day in C&C Bulmers,” he wrote on Facebook.
“What a great career it has been. I have worked with and dealt with so many wonderful people that I otherwise would never have met. Thank you to some of my work colleagues (below) for giving me a great send off in Letterkenny on Wednesday evening. We had a great night.”

Marty Carlin’s colleagues raise a glass (of Tennent’s) to him at his retirement do on Wednesday evening.
Marty had an eventful life, both on and off the pitch. He starred at midfield for Donegal from the mid-80s until the early 1990s. Marty, unfortunately, informed then county manager, Brian McEniff, in 1990 that he was ‘taking a break.’ Two years later the team won their first Ireland. In 1991, he was named the player of the club championship having taken his native Red Hughs to a senior county final. Marty also dabbled with soccer and rugby, and is now a talented golfer.
His biggest challenge, however, was in 2010 when he was diagnosed with cancer. But, Marty successfully battled back and often turns out for the Relay for Life ‘Donegal Survivor’s Choir’ these days.
We hope you have a long and happy retirement, Marty!
