A number of Donegal drivers were issued with fines and penalty points yesterday for having bald tyres on their vehicles.
Donegal Town Roads Policing Unit were out in force stopping vehicles to check their wheels during national ‘Tyre Safety Day’.
“Fixed charge penalty notices will now issue in the post to a number of drivers,” a garda spokesperson said.
“This means that they will each have to pay a fine of €80 and they will receive two penalty points.”
Motorists are asked to check their tyres regularly, and even more often when the tread depth reaches 3mm.
Ensure that your tyres have plenty of tread and are above the legal limit of 1.6mm (1mm for motorcycles). The more worn that your tyres become, the less grip they will have on the road surface. It therefore takes longer to stop a vehicle when the road surface is wet.
“We ask everyone to please conduct all necessary safety checks on their car before undertaking each journey,” the spokesperson added.
“Never take to the roads if your car is not in a roadworthy condition.”
