Donegal County Council is to receive an allocation of almost €19 million towards the maintenance and improvement of National Roads this year.
Deputy Pat ‘the Cope’ Gallagher said he has been informed by Minister for Transport, Darragh O’Brien, that €18,784,345 will go to the county for primary and secondary routes.
Of that figure, €15.6 million will be for Capital Investment – Protection and Renewal, as well as €2.1M for TEN_T Route improvement.
The single largest sum, €6M, will go towards the N56 Letterilly to Kilraine Junction (Glenties), while €1.7M has been allocated to the Lurgybrack-Listillion (Letterkenny) pavement works.
Donegal has received the fourth highest allocation in the country after Roscommon, Limerick and Cork.
Welcoming the funding, Minister of State Charlie McConalogue, said our roads are a key part of the county’s infrastructure and it’s extremely important that they are maintained and improved on a regular basis.
“This latest funding announcement allows Donegal County Council to continue its excellent work and ensuring that our roads are kept as safe as possible,” he said.
“The funding will also help in relation to improving connectivity and supporting the economic development of the region.
“This announcement comes just three weeks after Donegal County Council was allocated €4.27 million for Greenways and National Roads Active Travel infrastructure, bringing the overall investment in Donegal’s roads in 2025 to over €23 million.”
Senator Nikki Bradley also welcomed today’s announcement.
“I am delighted to see that funding has been allocated to Donegal County Council for essential national road repair works across Donegal,” she said.
“The continued safety for all road users is a key priority for Fine Gael in government and key to that is the protection and regeneration of our existing national road network.”
