Donegal student Siún Ibbs recently took part in the National Final of the All-Ireland Linguistics Olympiad (AILO), at the DCU campus.
Run by the ADAPT Centre and supported by Science Foundation Ireland, the AILO contest challenges students to engage in ‘code-breaking’ by applying logic, patience, and reasoning skills to solve complex puzzles in unfamiliar languages.
It is a key element of the nationwide Problem-Solving Initiative.
Siún, a student at St. Columba’s Comprehensive School, Glenties, flew the flag for the North-West, being the only student to represent County Donegal from among one hundred and three qualifiers from forty-six schools nationwide.
Siún participated in the grueling individual event in the morning, testing her problem-solving skills for over two and a half hours against the world’s toughest puzzles in logic, language, and linguistics.
In the afternoon she joined with students from other schools and participated in the two-hour team competition.
This was Siún’s third consecutive trip to the AILO final, which is an amazing achievement.
This year she improved her ranking in the individual round, with a top thirty finish and her team finished third out of twenty-six teams in the team competition.
