The Raymochy Historical Society will host a public talk this weekend on the Stewarts of Ballylawn and Ards.
The lecture will be given by renowned historian Charlie Gallagher (Marble Hill) this Sunday 23rd March at 2.30pm in the Resource Centre, Manorcunningham.
The talk is titled ‘The Stewarts of Ballylawn and Ards’ and will relate the story of the Stewart family that came from Scotland to Ballylawn after the Plantation of Ulster in 1609. They went on to establish Ballylawn Castle, between the villages of Manorcunningham and Newtowncunningham.
The descendants of the original family would later build Mount Stewart House in Co. Down, Ards House, Creeslough, and occupy Rockhill House, Letterkenny. Many of the male heirs became Members of Parliament in both Dublin and London, the most famous of whom was Lord Castlereagh who played a major part in the suppression of the United Irishmen (1798) and an architect of the Act of Union.
Charlie Gallagher is a leading authority on the history of the Stewart family and he will deliver his talk in the Resource Centre, Manorcunningham, this Sunday 23rd March at 2.30pm. This is a free event and everyone is welcome to come along. Tea and refreshments will be served afterwards.
