A popular Letterkenny man who was knocked down and killed near his home yesterday morning will be laid to rest on Thursday.
Anthony and Martin Gallagher, who were both in their 60s, were walking home from a night out in Letterkenny when they were struck by a taxi driven by a teenager.
The incident occurred at the town’s Lower Main Street just before 3am, less than 100 metres from their home.
Anthony Gallagher was a well-known figure in the town where he was employed as a ‘lollipop man’, helping schoolchildren to cross the road – less than 50 yards from where he was fatally injured.
His brother Martin has been transferred to Galway University Hospital where he is being treated for serious injuries sustained in the incident.
Both men lived together at the family home at Charlie Daly Terrace.
A young man suspected of driving the vehicle involved in the incident was arrested at the scene and questioned at Letterkenny Garda Station. He was released without charge this morning and a file is being prepared for the DPP.
A decision was later made to cancel the local St Patrick’s Day parade in the town as a mark of respect.
His death brings to five the number of deaths on Donegal roads so far this year.
Mr Gallagher’s remains will repose in the Eternal Light Chapel of Rest, Mountain Top, Letterkenny (F92 XE35) tomorrow evening, Wednesday, March 19 from 6pm until 9pm.
Funeral Mass will take place in St. Eunan’s Cathedral on Thursday morning, March 20 at 11am followed by interment in Conwal Cemetery.
Mr Gallagher is predeceased by his mother Brigid and aunt Rosaleen.
He is survived by his brother Martin, cousin Kevin and his wife Dolores.
He also leaves behind his extended family, neighbours and many friends.
