Gallery: Inside Rathmullan man’s stunning seaside house revival

written by Staff Writer March 17, 2025

Courtyard or no courtyard, Donegal man Eoghan O’Riain created an incredible ode to Rathmullan’s history and heritage in his new home which featured on RTÉ’s ‘The Great House Revival’ last night.

Episode six of the show last night headed to the Swilly village to follow the renovation of a three-story merchant home.

Asset Manager Eoghan O’Riain had travelled all over the world, but his dream was to settle in his mother’s home place in Rathmullan.

He had bought a terrace house to transform, with ambitions to be completed by Christmas 2023.

Architect Hugh Wallace was clearly delighted with the project and Eoghan’s passion for perfection, and the jovial discussions they had provided great entertainment.

The programme saw Eoghan place a careful focus on bringing Donegal colours and local history into the design, and he even met with local historian Angela Byrne to learn about Rathmullan’s international connections that go back centuries, including the Flight of the Earls.

Eoghan soon carved his legacy within the property through a stunning bespoke stained glass window at his door, facing directly onto the glistening Swilly shore.

Overcoming debates with Hugh over a courtyard and the soft Donegal climate, Eoghan proved himself to be a dynamic project manager, with a great team of tradesmen and women, delivering a cosy and stylish retreat.
