A spokesperson for the Northern Ireland Fire Service said they believe the cause of a gorse fire near the Donegal border at the weekend was ‘deliberate ignition.’
Emergency services received a call at 8:21pm on Sunday evening in relation to the blaze at Cornahaltie Road, Belleek, Fermanagh. It came just hours after a similar fire near Pettigo.
“Firefighters were called to reports of a small gorse fire on the Cornahaltie Road, Belleek, Fermanagh,” the spokesperson said.
“Firefighters used five beaters to extinguish the fire. The cause of the fire is believed to have been deliberate ignition and the incident was dealt with by 8:56pm.”
Earlier that evening, the Donegal Fire Service also dealt with a similar blaze on the south of the border near Pettigo.
The incident took place at around 5pm on bogland in the townland of Tieveboy, around five kilometres from Pettigo on the Laghey Road.
“Gardaí and the Fire Brigade attended the scene of a gorse fire at Tieveboy, Pettigo, Co Donegal at around 5pm on Sunday,” a spokesperson for the Garda Press Office said.
“Gardaí assisted with traffic control in the area. The fire was brought under control and extinguished by 7pm. No injuries were reported.”
The Donegal Fire Service did not respond to our query.
