A hotel on Arranmore Island is to be given a new lease of life with negotiations at an advanced stage on its purchase.

Kileens, a 20 bedroom hotel, has been vacant for a number of years.

However, it is now set to be given a new lease of life after an American couple commenced the purchase of the stunning property.

And the couple say the hotel could be reopened again as early as this summer.

The hotel was previously on the market since early last year with an asking price of €650,000.

The hotel also comes with its own fully licensed bar, a function room, restaurant, car park, outdoor area as well as stunning views of the water.

The property is a short ferry-ride away from the mainland at Burtonport and enjoys a long and busy summer season including one of Ireland’s most popular Gaeltacht schools.

Locals on the island are aware of the plans and have welcomed the move and plans by the family to take over the hotel.

The prospective buyers have children and have lived in Ireland for a number of years but are keen to love to Donegal.

The local population on Arranmore is around 500, but that swells during the summer months with many students coming from as far away as Dublin to learn or brush up on their Irish.

Arranmore was also one of Ireland’s first offshore islands to have a fibre broadband connection and boasts its own digital hub known as MODAM.

The island is twinned with Beaver Island, Michigan since October 2000 with many locals emigrants returning to their native Arranmore each year to catch up with family and friends.
