A new manager has been appointed to the Donegal Railway Museum.
Drumkeen native, Marty Gilroy, takes over at the Donegal Town attraction after Niall McCaughan took up another position closer to home in Inishowen.
“I’m delighted to have stepped into the cab and taken over the controls here at the Old Station House in Donegal,” Mr Gilroy said.
He has a background in the museum, heritage and tourism sector as Marketing and Events Coordinator of the James Joyce Centre, Dublin, where he was a core member of the Bloomsday Festival team.
Mr Gilroy moved back to Donegal last year while putting the finishing touches to his PhD.
“And when I saw this opportunity come up, I knew it was exactly the kind of challenge I wanted to take on next,” he added.
“Part of my vision for the museum is to focus on how the story of the railways is also the story of Donegal and its people, shaping the way they lived, worked, socialised and engaged with the rest of the country. Don’t worry though – I have other ideas too, like further developing the family-friendly and accessible aspects of our museum, collaborating with local artists and musicians, and of course continuing the ongoing work of rescuing, restoring and showcasing historic railway artefacts.”
Mr Gilroy also took the opportunity to commend outgoing manager, Niall McCaughan, who did a great service to the museum in his time there.
“I thank him for handing over a well-oiled engine with plenty of momentum; I look forward to finding out what lies further down the track.”
