A man who smeared a Garda cell with blood after being arrested for his own safety has been ordered to make a donation to charity.

Neil Peoples appeared at Letterkenny District Court after a drunken episode in which Gardai were forced to arrest him.

On August 8th, 20024, Gardai were on patrol when they noticed a person stagger out onto the road near Drumkeen.

When they approached the man, he was very unsteady on his feet and they decided to arrest him for his own safety.

Peoples, 26, was taken to Letterkenny Garda Station.

However, while being taken to a cell, he smeared blood on the outside of a cell door.

Peoples, of Drumkeen, Convoy later wrote a letter to Gardai and apologised for his actions on the night.

He was charged with a public order offence and also criminal damage when he smeared the blood on the cell door.

The court was told that Peoples was very drunk on the night but regretted his actions and was very sorry for what had happened on the night.

Judge Ciaran Liddy ordered the accused man to make a €250 to local charity Cara House by March 10th next and adjourned the case.
