The HSE will be providing temporary accommodation to the Donegal Hospice to ensure services are not disrupted during upcoming works.
The Hospice is preparing to begin a major construction project to build four new apartments for patients and families.
There will also be extra rooms built for additional facilities and services such as physiotherapy, occupational therapy and social work.
When construction takes place at the Knocknamona facility, it’s understood that hospice services will be temporarily relocated to the new Letterkenny Community Nursing Unit.
The CNU is scheduled for completion in the first quarter of 2026.
Councillor Ciaran Brogan received an update on the accommodation provision at this week’s meeting of the Regional Health Forum West. Cllr Brogan, who chairs the forum, welcomed the confirmation as ‘common sense prevailing’.
“The hospice raised a lot of their own funds to build this new accommodation, working closely with the HSE, and I am delighted there is an outcome regarding the accommodation during the construction period,” Cllr Brogan said.
“It’s common sense prevailing and I want to acknowledge the people at the coalface for making this happen,” he added.
