A Ballybofey resident caught with 9,000 illegal cigarettes at his home has appeared in court.
Aranus Stonys appeared at Letterkenny Circuit Court where he pleaded guilty to having the contraband.
The court was told that the value of the cigarettes found at Stonys’ address at Blue Cedars, Ballybofey on April 19th, 2021 was €6,292.80.
Stonys spoke only to plead guilty through an interpreter.
He was charged that on that date and location with the evasion of a duty of excise on excisable products with intent to defraud either directly or indirectly the state of such duty.
The charge is Contrary to Section 119(2) and (3) of the Finance Act, 2001.
The accused man’s barrister, Mr Damian Crawford, BL, asked the court for a probation and welfare report saying the accused man is not working and does not have any previous convictions.
Judge John Aylmer agreed and adjourned the case for sentencing to the July siting of the circuit court.
