The landmark Nuremore Hotel & Country Club in Carrickmacross in Co Monaghan has been sold to a consortium of investors led by the well-known Donegal family group, the McGettigans.
Agent CBRE has confirmed the sale of the property on behalf of Declan De Lacy Liquidator of Nubility Capital Ltd.
The 70-bedroom hotel, which ceased trading in 2023, was offered for sale with a guide price of €6m.
The hotel and golf resort will now undergo a refurbishment, with plans by the McGettigans and their fellow investors to create more than 100 new jobs.
Before its closure, the Nuremore was a business synonymous with hospitality in the North East region that was established and developed by Julie Gilhooly and her family.
The hotel served as the training base for Jack Charlton’s Irish soccer team as they prepared for their 1993 World Cup qualifier in Belfast as well as the tournament finals in the US the following year.
In 2020, the Gilhoolys retired from the business and sold it to the Kylin Prime Group as a going concern.
The High Court made orders to wind up Nuremore Hotel Management Ltd in 2023 after the judge accepted that the company was insolvent and unable to pay its debt to revenue.
The hotel sits on 160 acres of parkland with a championship golf course as its centrepiece that also features a stand alone club house.
In a statement, a spokesperson for the investor group, which has purchased the hotel, said: “When the opportunity to acquire Nuremore arose, we immediately recognised its potential – not just as a business investment but as a key asset for the local community”.
“Our goal is to breathe new life into the hotel and golf club, enhancing both the environmental and economic landscape of the area,” the spokesperson said.
“We are committed to a comprehensive refurbishment, working in close collaboration with the local council, national organisations, and key stakeholders to maximise the site’s potential. This investment will not only create employment opportunities but also position Nuremore as a world-class leisure and hospitality destination,” the spokesperson said.
The spokesperson also added the intentions of the investors to create close ties with the McGettigan hospitality group.
“At the heart of our plans is an unwavering dedication to exceptional hospitality. We are excited to introduce new food and beverage options, including a McGettigan’s Pub, while also reinvigorating the golf course, meeting facilities, and leisure centre”.
“Our objective is to create a welcoming, high-quality space for both residents and visitors alike,” the spokesperson said.
“Furthermore, sustainability and environmental responsibility will be key pillars of our development strategy. We intend to collaborate with relevant agencies to ensure our investment aligns with best practices in eco-friendly tourism and sustainable development,” the spokesperson added.
