The islanders of Arranmore will show solidarity with their Palestinian counterparts when they show a unique film on the island tonight.
The film, ‘Shanshula’, highlights the struggles of the fishing community in Gaza.
A spokesperson for the organisers said “At 7pm (GMT) on World Social Justice Day, 20th February 2025, communities, villages and fishing peoples in Ireland, Scotland and other parts of the world, are coming together to proudly present the film, ‘Shanshula’ in solidarity with the fishing men and women of Palestine.
Shanshula is a film about the fishing community of Gaza, and the showings will be introduced by the filmmaker and tireless human rights activist, Musheir El Farra.
The 33 minute long film will be shown in Ionad an Chrois Bhealaigh, Árainn Mhór, tonight and all are welcome to attend.
Doors open at 6.30pm and the film will start at 7pm sharp.
Please note, the film is PG rated but does contain distressing scenes.
Shanshula details the lives of the Palestinian fishing community in the Gaza Strip who have lost loved ones, have been displaced or disabled by Israeli navy aggression.
Shanshula is a type of fishing net in the slang of local Palestinian fishermen who confront daily humiliations. The film also tells the story of one of the few Palestinian fisherwomen in the Gaza Strip.
The film was about to be premiered in Gaza in early October 2023. Following the Israeli onslaught, an addition was made to the film to show the forceful evacuation of the fishing community from the north to the south of the Gaza Strip and the suffering of the Palestinian people under the Israeli genocidal attack.
Shanshula was produced in cooperation between Sheffield Palestine solidarity campaign and a local media organisation providing training for youngsters called the Palestinian Vanguard Station which was bombed and destroyed by Israeli F16 fighter jets in Jan 2024.”
