A group of students from Mulroy College came together to help make a big difference in cleaning up Rathmullan beach.
Mulroy College’s Transition Year students visited Rathmullan last week as part of An Taisce’s Clean Coasts Programme, for the beach clean and some learning about the biodiversity present along Rathmullan Strand.
Led by Clean Coasts Donegal Development Officer, Sinéad Keogh, the students were well armed with an array of gloves and litter pickers to help clean up the coast and learn some valuable information about one of their local beaches.
The students collected an impressive 70kg of litter from the beach during the clean, before also learning about the famous Rathmullan Anchor.

The students learned about the history of the anchor, which is believed to date back to a Royal Navy fleet ship from World War 1 – and the recent local efforts to clean and preserve the anchor to preserve it as a unique part of maritime history on the strand.
Speaking about the event, Sinéad Keogh expressed her gratitude for the enthusiastic participation of the students and the support of the Rathmullan Coastcare group.
“It’s inspiring to see young people so engaged in protecting and learning about their local environment. Beach clean-ups like this not only contribute to a cleaner coastline but also help foster a sense of environmental responsibility and connection to nature.”
