A day of fundraising is taking place in Falcarragh next weekend to support local woman Kathleen Barrett, who lost her home in a fire last month.
Kathleen is lucky to be alive after a blaze ripped through her home on the night of 23rd January, the eve of Storm Éowyn.
Mrs Barrett suffered severe smoke inhalation and minor burns as she attempted to rescue her pet dog, who was eventually saved by firefighters.

Kathleen’s home after a devastating fire tore through it last month
Kathleen, who is a widow and cancer survivor, spent some time in ICU following the fire. She continues to make a recovery while living in temporary accommodation and is awaiting confirmation of a suitable long-term residence.
‘ShamROCK for Kathleen’ will take place in the Shamrock Bar in Falcarragh on Saturday 22nd February to raise funds for Kathleen in her time of need. There will be music by Killing Time, Karl Simmons, Brian Farrell and friends. All welcome. Follow the Facebook page for more information.
Kathleen will also benefit from a scramble organised by Cloughaneely Golf Club on the same day.
More than €25,000 was raised in the aftermath of the fire at Kathleen’s home. The GoFundMe page continues to invite donations here: https://gofund.me/fd1aaab5
In the appeal, Kathleen’s niece Maeve Barrett said: “Kathleen would and has done anything for anyone and it’s just so sad after not long losing her husband to cancer to be left with no home that she shared for most of her life with her husband and little dog Collie.
“So we are reaching out to the public for any small donation that will help to get her back on her feet and hopefully into “her own little corner” in the near future.”
