Hundreds of new speed limit signs in Donegal have come at a cost of up to €311 each, it has been revealed.
On Friday the 7th of February, the implementation of a 60kph speed limit on Rural Roads required a major project to change road signs nationwide.
Projected costs, as revealed by Donegal County Council, are €252 per post and €59 per sign or supplementary plate. The change has been funded by the Department of Transport.
The information was provided to Cllr. Declan Meehan at Tuesday’s meeting of the Letterkenny-Milford Municipal District.
Cllr Meehan was told that a total of 438 signs were erected in the Letterkenny Milford Municipal District alone as part of the change.
New posts were not required in all cases, the council said.
The posts were only required at junctions between local roads and regional or national roads. The remaining locations involved replacing an existing 80kph sign with a 60kph or the Rural Speed limit sign.
The Rural Speed limit sign, which is a black circle with diagonal black lines, now signifies a default 60kph speed limit on local secondary and tertiary roads.
More changes are on the way in the future.
An urban speed limit review is currently underway by local authorities to consider locations for a default speed limit of 30 kph. This is due to be introduced in urban areas in the near future following the introduction of new bye laws.
