There is great sadness after the passing of beloved Donegal service dog, Bowie.
“Mister David Bowie”, to give him his full name, became a service dog after being rescued from the pound.
He brought joy to countless people across Donegal for the last six years, helping patrol beaches with lifeguards in Donegal in the Summer, while also bringing comfort to patients at the Donegal Hospice, local hospitals, respite care facilities, nursing homes, and special needs schools across the county as a therapy dog.
Bowie’s incredible skills translated also into becoming a dedicated assistance dog, after his owner Esther suffered severe injuries in a horse-riding accident.
Esther suffered a shattered pelvis, spleen removal, a collapsed lung, and the loss of several teeth in the accident, and credited the assistance of Bowie in helping her walk again and regain her stability.
Sadly, Bowie suddenly passed away recently after being diagnosed with cancer.
“Bowie’s adventures weren’t limited to Donegal. He was a well-travelled dog, visiting much of Europe and the UK. He even graced the silver screen, appearing in several film productions and photo shoots, charming famous dog-loving actors,” Donegal Lifeguard training said in a statement.
“Our lifeguard trainer Esther and her husband, family, friends and the local community, will miss him forever,” they continued.
“While all dogs are good dogs, Bowie was truly exceptional.”
“He will be remembered for his bravery, strength, and love for everyone he ever met.”
