Inspirational Moville woman Geraldine Mullan will scale Mount Kilimanjaro for charity, and in memory of her late mother Margaret.
Geraldine had already been preparing to scale the largest peak in Africa for charity this month, but now there will be an additional personal motivation to finish the climb.
Her beloved mother, Margaret, passed away at the age of 86 last week and was laid to rest last Sunday.
“It has been a very emotional, poignant and difficult week as we laid our beautiful mum Margaret (Connaughton) to rest on Sunday last,” Geraldine posted on social media.
“In her 86 years, she was an amazing wife to our loving dad Mautie, (happily married for 56 years), wonderful mother to my siblings Elizabeth, Henry, John, Mary T, Paul & I and groovy grandmother to her 16 grandchildren, as well as awesome sister/sister-in-law/aunt, great neighbor and friend to one and all and as described during her funeral mass, not just nanny to her family but ‘nanny to the whole community as she made everyone feel special.'”
“She knew all about my upcoming trip as I kept her updated on it over the last few months, so I will be carrying her in my heart next week alongside my beloved John, Tomás and Amelia and I know the four of them will keep me going step by step – and in mum’s words from her favourite song “one day at a time’.”
Galway native Geraldine tragically lost her husband and two children in a tragic accident in 2020, has dedicated herself in recent years to helping others in memory of her loved ones, through charity fundraising and the Mullan Hope Centre.
Her latest fundraiser will see Geraldine and her friend, Katie Kilpatrick, scale Mount Kilimanjaro to raise money for Children in Crossfire.
They have already raised over £23,000 for the charity at the time of writing, just two days before they set off on their journey on Monday the 17th of February.
