The Tánaiste, Simon Harris, is to travel to Lebanon next month to raise concerns over delays in the trial of those accused of the killing of UN Peacekeeper Private Sean Rooney.
Earlier this week, the family of the Donegal soldier was informed that the hearing was pushed back again.
Private Sean Rooney, a 24-year-old from Newtowncunningham, was killed when a convoy of Irish troops serving with a UN peacekeeping force was ambushed and fired upon on December 14th, 2022.
The shooting happened near the town of Al-Aqbiya in the south of Lebanon, a stronghold of Hezbollah.
Seven men with connections to the militant group have been charged with the attack but only one man has appeared before the courts.
Earlier this week, the trial was postponed yet again – this time for eight months.
The Irish Sun is reporting that the new Defence and Foreign Affairs Minister, Simon Harris, is planning to travel to Lebanon as a matter of urgency to press authorities on the repeated delays of the case.
