A number of schools in Co. Clare were forced to close today after an email was issued threatening ‘one of the most prolific attacks in Irish history’.
The threat, which has since been discredited by gardaí, was sent to schools in the early hours of this morning.
The sender of the email claimed that firearms were placed around schools on the email list.
Gardaí have confirmed that they are investigating the incident.
“Following initial assessment, An Garda Síochána is satisfied that the security threat is not credible and there is no ongoing risk to the public,” a statement said.
“Gardaí are engaging with the affected educational establishments with regard to this incident.
“Enquiries are ongoing. No further information is available at this time.”
Fianna Fáil TD for Clare, Cathal Crowe said: “Gardai acted swifty on this “threat” and have now confirmed to me that there is no active threat.
“This was a very scary incident for parents, students, school staff and the public and I have full trust in Clare’s Gardai to properly investigate this and establish all the facts.”
