A Fine Gael Senator has resigned from the party after being arrested in Dublin last month.
Senator Martin Conway resigned from the party after a faux-pas in which he was arrested by Gardaí on O’Connell Street, according to the Irish Independent.
The Irish Independent reports that the Fine Gael politician was arrested by Gardaí after being found face down and on all fours on the 22nd of January.
He was released without charge hours later, but the Senator did not let his Fine Gael party know of the incident – and was re-elected to the Seanad just days ago.
Now in a public statement, Senator Conway has resigned from the party and will face a disciplinary process.
He told the Irish Independent that he had been intoxicated due to a combination of sleeping pills and alcohol on the night.
The Senator apologised to his party colleagues and to Vision Ireland, the group who had nominated him for the Seanad.
