A local councillor is making inquiries over the unusual placement of a speed van on Buncrana’s Main Street.
The GoSafe van has been operating in an area near a speed ramp/pedestrian crossing for the past two days.
Councillor Jack Murray has questioned the motive of the van, which is operated on behalf of the gardaí, due to the lack of speeding in this specific area.
“You literally cannot build a dangerous speed at this point. You would damage your car’s suspension if you did,” Cllr Murray wrote on social media.
“This raises the question as to whether this is intended to raise revenue or increase safety. It has also caused concern to local businesses as a parking spot has now been reserved for two days.”
Cllr Murray says he will be raising the concerns of local people with the RSA and An Garda Síochána, and ask that the van be relocated to a “more beneficial location, where accidents are more likely to occur”.
“Ultimately this is not a decision which politicians have a say on, but I think it’s worth flagging all the same,” he said.
