A councillor has claimed a sign erected by a government agency outside a Twin Towns crèche is posing a road safety risk.
The structure was recently installed by Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII) near the entrance to the Ready Steady Grow childcare facility at Donegal Road, Ballybofey. The sign warns motorists of the presence of pedestrian crossings in the town.
TII was established through a merger of the National Roads Authority (NRA) and the Railway Procurement Agency (RPA), and was set up to deliver and operate safe and efficient light rail and national road networks.
However, Cllr Martin Harley called for the signs immediate removal at Wednesday’s meeting of the Lifford-Stranorlar Municipal District (MD).
“Vision lines are being blocked as a result of the new sign at Ready Steady Grow on the Donegal Road,” Cllr Harley said.
“The National Roads Design Office (NRDO) should be checking if signs are blocking vision lines along roads. Prevention is better than cure and we need a report before an accident happens.”
Donegal County Council’s Area Roads Engineer, Claire McKeever, told the meeting that all signs erected along roads require planning permission.
We asked TII for a comment.
